Before the Timberland shoes or ‘Timbs’ that we all know today, they were called Abingtons prior to 1970. Founded by Nathan Swartz, he bought the company in 1952 and changed the company’s entire business strategy from producing shoes as per the design of other companies to manufacturing their own line of boots and shoes. In 1969, he created the first fully waterproof boots usable in cold weather and humid temperatures by incorporating injection moulding technology and made them publicly available to the American people. Timberland boots rose to popularity being widely accepted by the public for its versatile use as work boots as well as lifestyle shoes. In the mid 80’s, the first Timberland womens shoes were released and its rising popularity had reached the doorstep of popular rap artists from the hip-hop music community. Rappers such as Notorious B.I.G., Jaz-Z, DMZ, Wu-tang clan and more began rocking Timberland boots sparking a new budding interest in the hip-hop community blasting off the sales charts of the company. They are also the result of many known collaborations with top-tier brands, designers and celebrities.
